INDIAN HEALTH AGENCY EXPOSES DETAILS ABOUT MILLIONS OF PREGNANT WOMEN

The country's cybersecurity office took three weeks to remove the documents.
A health department in India has exposed more than 12.5 million medical records of pregnant women after failing to secure a database. The records cover a period of five years for a state in the north of the country and include confidential data such as the family medical history, the mother's age, details about other children, information from a doctor and information regarding court cases.

Bob Diachenko, a security researcher, discovered the database last month. However, it took three weeks before the IT emergency response team in India could remove the database records, which is still available online, according to ZDNet.

Much of the data was collected under the Prenatal Diagnostic and Pre-conception Techniques Act, passed by the Indian Parliament in 1994 to prohibit the determination of prenatal sex. Its goal was to end the selective abortions of female fetuses and decrease the asymmetric sex ratio of men in the nation. According to the law, tests that reveal the sex of a fetus can only be performed for real medical reasons. The tests must be registered with the reasoning to perform them.

The exposed recordings included information about the dates and locations of these tests, complications of pregnancy, contact information with the patient and abortions, as well as passwords and identifiers of the administrators. In addition, there was detailed information about doctors and clinics equipped with ultrasound and other equipment to detect the sex of the fetus, as well as complaints against health professionals and institutions that perform procedures, Sex determination tests.
